back to normal

…or as normal as it gets here. David, Nina, and the kids departed on Wednesday; Mary and Wesley are slowly coming back to their ordinary routine.

We had a lot of fun during this visit.

A little family history:

They ate all of the tomatoes in the “free produce” pile.

They played.

Then we took a little walk. Don’t they look pastoral?

Then we went out and ate crabs! The visiting contingent assured us that they didn’t mind eating them two days in a row.

The next day, we had a crab feast at our house!

Jack pulled Mary around in the wagon until she looked like this:

Wesley had a joyous afternoon with the John Deere ATV.

Mary imitated a garden fairy.

Molly swung.

On the last day, we went to see the airplanes:

Wesley was floored.

Doesn’t Mary look old these days?

We also had a lovely day at the beach, but there are no pics because I couldn’t figure out how to take a camera and not ruin it. It was great, though. We got there in the early afternoon, swam and played, went to lunch when a thunderstorm blew up, and then went back after the storm to swim and play some more. The kids loved it. Mary was fearless and learned how to jump when a wave came in, and even Wesley got brave enough to let us carry him out to get his feet wet and to play in the little pool that Jack dug near the shore.

It was a really nice visit. I can’t believe how big my niece and nephews are! We miss them.

trip chronicle, part 1

The kids and I just got back from Michigan, where we spent a week with my parents–here are a few pics from the beginning of the trip!

Day 1: preparing for Sarah’s bridal shower! (My cousin Sarah is getting married! The cousins are dropping like flies.)

Here are Mary and Wesley, following Grandpa around the house to sweep off the ramp before the party. Don’t they look like baby ducks?

Wesley wanted to participate but he kept getting distracted and wandering off to explore.

Mary loves the ramp–well, they both do. Mary was delighted to sit on the railing and pose for some pictures.

Vinnie was not happy to have his space invaded by a pair of three-foot-tall lunatics.

At the shower, they were all for the food. Wesley tried to crawl up on the table to get to the cookies.

Mary was obsessed with the chips and ate enough Doritos to send her into a rage-filled toddler tailspin. Ah, well. Live and learn.

More tomorrow from the rest of the trip!

some recent photos

I’ve been a little remiss in posting photos–school started the week before last and we’ve been trying to adjust to the new routine. The kids are having to get up earlier two days a week now, which is always takes a bit of time to get used to. Mary is taking a dance class one morning a week now from Conor’s aunt Elaine; I think she’s going to LOVE it but it is at 9:30 (and not nearby). So, we’re busy!

But we have managed to fit in a few things. Mary’s birthday was last week; I cannot believe she is 3. Truly, she is such a big kid now. At the grocery store, she picked out her birthday cake: “Cake or cupcakes?” “Cupcakes!” “Chocolate, strawberry, yellow, or speckled cake?” “Speckled cake!” “Chocolate, strawberry, cream cheese, or vanilla frosting?” “Chocolate!” “Sprinkles or stars?” “Stars!”

Then she helped me bake the cupcakes:

Wesley recommended some other baking–he was hoping for rhubarb.

He’s figured out the walking thing and moved on to prancing.

Grandma M and Anne came over to eat birthday cupcakes and spaghetti with us.

We also had birthday artichokes.

Wesley says, “More noodle!”

Oh, sweet noodle.

Grandma gave her a backpack for her birthday–with goodies in all of the pockets!

Wesley immediately stole the new ball.

Then we had cupcakes (she put on the sprinkles herself):

When she blew out the candle, Wesley went crazy applauding.

Yum. Cupcake.

So that was her birthday. Here is a pic of her wearing the backpack later in the week (she loves her backpack and takes it everywhere):

Or maybe two pics.
