something I was thinking about today

What would you do for a living if you hadn’t chosen what you did choose? (In other words, what are your backup ideas–or, indeed, future plans if you’re thinking of a change? I think it’s interesting to know what people have in the backs of their heads. What are your top five?

Here are mine (although they change pretty often, usually when I’m tired of trying to write my dissertation and daydreaming about a real job):
1. Editor (books or magazines, maybe)
2. Midwife or doula
3. Crossword puzzle writer (hey, Will Shortz makes a living at it)
4. Photographer
5. Book buyer for a little, intellectual bookstore (you know, the kind that doesn’t sell Dan Brown novels)

Tell me yours.

as you probably know, i had no plan for my life and actually have no idea how i became a lawyer. if i had not gone to law school, my political theory degree would likely have kept me locked in shitty administrative jobs for the rest of my life, since there was no way i was going to work at some think tank or for a politician or shit like that.

if i could do whatever i wanted, and money was not an object, i would probably be a travel writer. but then i think about that and i’m like “who wants the pressure of deadlines and writing things.”

when i was thinking about law school i was also thinking about social work school, so maybe i would have done that. but that is pretty much what i am doing now, for even less pay and without the fun of going to court, which is why i rejected the idea in the first place.

blah, who knows. i would probably just be in some crappy office job hating my life.
