100 things about me

  • I love Jane Austen.
  • I am a self-taught seamstress and it totally shows.
  • I love dark, dark, dark chocolate.
  • I’m not a good napper–I wake up feeling groggy and then I can’t sleep at night.
  • I’m worried about job interviews because I don’t have professional hair.
  • I’m very bad at writing cover letters that don’t sound totally generic.
  • I’m good at taking tests.
  • I sometimes bake our bread.
  • My favorite kind of animal is the sheep.
  • My student evaluations usually say that my class was fun but too much work.
  • My favorite sheets are flannel.
  • I always use a tablecloth.
  • My house has almost no decorations because all available wall space is used for books. But I like the way they look, so I don’t mind.

  • When I was an undergrad, I worked nighttime security in a dorm and I had to break up a fight once.
  • I got my bachelor’s degree in three years with exactly the number of required credits–not a single extra one.

  • The best thing about my new house is that it has radiator heat so I can put my feet on the radiator by my bed.
  • Or maybe the best thing about my house is that it has a front porch and a back porch.
  • I don’t like library books because I think they’re sort of gross and dirty.
  • I don’t like snow except for on Christmas (optional) and for Christmas shopping (mandatory).
  • When I got married, I saved the top to the wedding cake and then we forgot to eat it on our anniversary.
  • When I get a real teaching job, I hope for a shared office. I like to have someone to talk to.

  • I love long books (you know, like Trollope’s Palliser series. yum.).
  • I don’t like being pregnant, although I do like babies (after 6 weeks at least).
  • I hate being on hold but I never remember to use my cordless phone so that I can walk around while I wait.
  • I like wearing stockings but I never have a reason to.
  • I like going to plays.
  • I love shopping for books, fabric, wine, food, shoes, and gifts. I hate shopping for anything else, like clothes, household products, and appliances.
  • I have a maternity skirt I wear all the time even when I’m not pregnant (I use a safety pin to hold it up). Nina bought it for me.
  • I cook a lot of soup.
  • I hate processed cheese but I love cheap cheddar cheese (like the Target brand).
  • I can’t ice skate or ski. (At all.)
  • I don’t like chickens or pigs.
  • My favorite kind of food is sushi. I especially like the kind that’s a little block of rice with a piece of fish on top.
  • I’ve never used the kind of lawnmower that you walk behind.
  • I’m not good at shopping for books because I’m bad at scanning the titles. My husband finds things that I think are interesting in stores that I think are boring.
  • I use a lot of swear words–but not scatological ones.
  • I used to read a lot of science fiction but now I mostly don’t like it.
  • I have a lot of maps but they are seldom in the car.
  • I almost never hang up clean laundry before it gets worn again.
  • I like gardening.
  • My house has 28 bookcases.
  • I read, on average, a book a day (slightly less when there’s a newborn in the house).
  • My mother used to be a hairdresser.
  • I have known some of my friends since I was five.
  • I have a horse named Jake who lives with my parents.
  • I have one sister.
  • I use a Mac.
  • I loved living in the dorms at college.
  • I hate mushrooms. I try them every couple of years to see if I like them yet.
  • I take my kids to the movies.

  • I like watching a few TV shows on DVD–Dr. Who, Arrested Development, and the Muppet Show.
  • I have TV and watch only the Oscars and election coverage.
  • I’ve forgotten what little math I ever learned.
  • I am a college teacher.

  • Our house has very few working doorknobs.
